Cardinals End Season with First Round Loss to Paris

By Thad Requet
The South Shelby Cardinals basketball season came to an end on Tuesday, Feb. 25 with a 39-35 loss to the Paris Coyotes in the first round of District play in Clopton.
The Cardinals were led by senior Guy Timbrook who finished the game with 16 points and five rebounds. Cole Mitchell added 12 points, including two 3-pointers.
The Cardinals battled the Coyotes in what was a close game the entire way. Paris led South Shelby 11-9 after one quarter of play. The Coyotes were able to stretch it out just a little by outscored the Cardinals 10-9 in the second quarter to take a 21-18 lead at the half.
South Shelby had a good third quarter, as the Cardinals were able to outscore Paris 11-7 to take a 29-28 lead after three quarters of play.
The Coyotes were able to regain the lead in the final quarter and secure the win.
The Cardinals were only able to connect on 3 of 17 3-pointers on the night, and they went 0-4 from the free throw line. Those factors played a big part in the four point loss.
In a season where the Cardinals didn’t see a lot of wins, they continued to battle through a very good Clarence Cannon Conference season and nearly knocked off the higher seeded Coyotes in the first round of District play. The team showed a lot of fight and really never showed signs of going through the motions, but instead competed hard.
