Shelbina Teen Dies in Accidental Shooting

A 17-year-old Shelbina teen died early Wednesday morning of a gun shot wound, according to Shelbina Police Chief Jerry Fenton.

Zachery Stokes, the victim in the shooting, died shortly after 1 a.m. in the 200 block of West Beech. Fenton said Air-Evac was called to the scene but Stokes died before he could be transported.

The shooter was a 23-year-old man. Fenton said that although the shooting has been ruled accidental, the investigation is continuing and charges could be filed at a later time. There have been no arrests.

The weapon was a .50 caliber muzzle loader, according to Fenton. He noted that there were no drugs or alcohol involved.

There will be more details as they develop. The story will appear in the July 24 issue of the Shelbina Weekly.
