| Flooding in Shelby County
| Salt River northeast of Lakenan.
Salt River was raging last week after heavy rains hit the local area and areas north of Shelby County. Many say the river stages exceeded those of 2008. Pictured above is a view of the Salt River bridge northeast of Lakenan on Route T on Thursday afternoon. The river crossed over Highway 36 just west of the bridge located east of Lakenan. The highway was closed for around 12 hours until the water receeded. For more pictures of floodwaters, check out www.shelbinaweekly.com.

| Weatherfords Talk to Council About Drainage Issues
The Shelbina City Council heard from Rex and Cathy Weatherford about water drainage issues in their yard and their neighbor’s yard during Tuesday night’s regular Shelbina City Council meeting. Drainage Issues Rex and Cathy Weatherford showed council members, Mayor John Smith, and City Administrator Dennis Klusmeyer a group of pictures from their yard and their neighbor’s yard. There has been some discrepancies on drainage issues, and standing water in the neighbor’s yard. The Weatherford’s were asking for the council’s consent to authorize them to maintain the current sub-surface drain system on the city alley, and extend the tile straight out to Myers Street, underneath the north edge of their gravel driveway. They requested that City workers fix the slope in the east end of the city’s ditch allowing water to completely drain off of their neighbor’s land. The council approved a motion to allow this to take place. They talked about a time period, which could be around 30 days, depending on weather conditions. Rex Weatherford said he would do the work on the project to make it drain properly. Total Patcher Klusmeyer talked to the council again about the possible purchase of the Total Patcher. Council members discussed the issues for over 40 minutes. City Superintendent Rob Trivette talked to several references on the machine and he said all of them stated it was a very good machine for potholes, alligator cracking, but it doesn’t work as well for an entire road. He also said he was told it would need to be stored in a heated room in the winter. Trivette said the eight or nine people he talked to said it was great for patching potholes and was overall a good piece of equipment. | Shelbina Senior Center
Facing Major Funding Cuts
The Shelbina Senior Citizens Center is facing some very tough times as a result of State cuts that will affect the fiscal budget to the tune of approximately $80,000 per year. According to Debra Sparks, the Center receives money through the Area Agency on Aging. “Those cuts will affect mainly the meals, but also some in-home services,” she said. Those cuts will add up to about $11,000 in the next fiscal year. The State has also cut the reimbursement rate for in-home services that are provided by the Center through the State. That will total 32 cents per hour for home aid or personal care, and 82 cents an hour for RN visits. Those two cuts will total about $8,000 less dollars the Center will have to work with. That plus the $11,000 cuts out a little over $19,000 from the budget. For the full story, see this week’s issue of the Shelbina Weekly.
