| School Board Hears Public Comment Regarding the Gifted Program and Administrators
The Shelby County R-IV School Board held a work session meeting on Wednesday, June, 30 at the South Shelby High Middle School Library. Public Comment Concerning the Gifted Program Karen Kerin and approximately seven to 10 supporters of Tammy Ratliff attended the meeting. Kerin spoke on behalf of the group. “I’m just speaking as an individual here, I think there are some concerns we’ve heard about, evidently you’re still thinking about if you’re going with the gifted program or not,” she said. “I know you’ve decided that already, but at the time, didn’t know that there wouldn’t be a big portion of the state money. My understanding is that one of the options is for Tammy (Ratliff)...and she would be excellent as a Gifted coordinator, however, we’ve got some middle school people here...we think she fits really well right where she is. “I don’t like that idea (considering her for the Gifted coordinator), it concerns me greatly.” For the full story, see this week’s issue of the Shelbina Weekly.

| Highway 36 Celebration to Take Place this Weekend

Last month MoDOT announced that the project to four-lane US 36 between Macon and Hannibal is nearing completion. To commemorate this milestone in Missouri’s transportation history, MoDOT and local communities are preparing a grand event for Saturday, July 10. To dedicate the corridor the day will begin with a 5K Run/Walk on an unopened section of the new highway between Lentner and Clarence. The run will begin at Route TT, 2 miles west of Lentner. Following the run a ribbon cutting ceremony will be held in Macon at 9:00 a.m. at Sydenstricker’s. Many federal, state and local dignitaries have been invited to participate in the ceremony. Other activities in Macon include re enactors portraying famous individuals in history along the US 36 corridor from JC Penney to General John J. Pershing to Mark Twain; a hot air balloon display; live music and souvenir items available. For the full story, see this week’s issue of the Shelbina Weekly.

| SCED Holds Monthly Meeting
The Shelby County Economic Development Council held its July meeting Thursday night, July 1 at the Shelby County University Extension Center. Incentives Glenn Eagan said that he and SCED Director Teresa Keller have been working on incentive plans for prospective businesses that may be interested in coming to Shelby County. He mentioned that the Enhanced Enterprise Zone was already in place. “If we get a business that is retail or they want exemption on personal property, the county only shares a small part of the tax break that we can give. It also includes the schools, ambulance district and other entities that would have to share the break on either retail or personal property,” Eagan explained. He said they talked about setting up a meeting with the board presidents of each of these taxing entities, to kind of feel them out to see what they would be interested in giving or doing more than what is in place. He said they would talk about how many jobs it would bring in, how many people it would bring in and the impact it would have on the county.
