Motorists Need to be Aware of Additional Stop Signs in Shelbina

The City of Shelbina has recently put up new stop signs around town.

As drivers make their way through Shelbina, they need to be aware of additional stops they will be required to make at certain intersections.
   Two additional stop signs were put in place at the intersections of East Spruce and First street along with the two existing signs to make a four-way stop. Two additional stop signs were put up at the intersections of East Walnut and Fourth Street to complete a four-way stop. A stop sign was added to the intersection of East Mill and Dickerson, to make it a three-way stop. No parking signs are also going up on Dickerson Street.

Shelby County R-IV School Board Approves Budget for the Next Fiscal Year

The Shelby County R-IV School Board gave approval to the 2010-11 budget as it was presented by Superintendent Rick Roberts during Thursday night’s regular board meeting held at the Clarence Elementary School.
   2010-11 Budget
   The board reviewed the budget numbers prepared by Roberts for the upcoming fiscal year. “In this tough economic time, it is even increasingly harder to budget. The budget has been prepared with the best information we have as of June 2010,” Roberts said. he noted that there could still be some last minute changes in Jefferson City. The 2010-11 school year may see some withholdings from the state. The budget is based on an eight percent decrease in funding, plus a lower ADA (average daily attendance).

Shelbina Man Suffers Serious Injuries in Accident Saturday

A one-vehicle accident left a Shelbina man with serious injuries around 11:50 p.m. Saturday night on Highway 15, four miles north of Shelbina.
   According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 31-year-old Todd E. Leftwich was northbound, attempting to allude arrest from the Shelbina Police Department, when he lost control, ran off the right side of the road and overturned several times before the vehicle came to rest on its top.

Hunnewell Man Who Made Threats at the Courthouse Dies in Vehicle Accident Friday

A Hunnewell man who was facing charges of making terrorist threats at the Shelby County Courthouse was killed in a two-vehicle accident at around 4:05 p.m. Friday on U.S. 36 at Route K, five miles west of Monroe City.
   According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 76-year-old Darrell L. Large was at a median crossover and failed to yield to a 2005 Freightliner driven by 55-year-old Jeffrey A. Ervin of Council Bluffs, Iowa. The freightliner, which was traveling westbound, struck Large’s 1976 Ford pickup when it pulled into its path. Large was ejected from the vehicle, the patrol said.

Platz Talks About Her Experience in the Bright Lights

Elizabeth Platz stands in the Grand Hyatt Hotel where the Bee is held, overlooking the immense atrium.

Elizabeth Platz won over the hearts of people across the country with her personality and humor recently when she competed on national television in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
   She finished in a three-way tie for second place in the event that took place in Washington D.C. and featured her and nine others during primetime on ABC.
   Platz just missed the television rounds last year and had set a goal to make it to those rounds this year. She worked hard to get there. “I did think I had a pretty good shot at making the televised rounds – but it all does come down to which words you get, so I wasn’t sure whether I’d make it or not. My goal was to do the best I could and I wanted the best speller to win, which I was pretty sure wasn’t me, but I was really hoping to make it to the semifinals and finals,” she explaind.
