As of Monday, a total of $32,363, surpassing this year’s goal of $25,000. Money collected up until August will count toward the 2010 total. The event was held at South Shelby High School this year because of thunderstorms in the area. The silent auction was set up in the hallway outside the high school gym by the trophy cases. A total of $1,800 was brought in from donated items at the silent auction. For the full story, see this week’s issue of the Shelbina Weekly.

| Platz Finishes Tied for Second in the Nation
| Pictured above is Elizabeth Platz on the stage at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C.
Elizabeth Platz competed for the second year in a row in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. After not making the television rounds last year, she charged through the semifinal round carried by ESPN and into the final 10 contestants that was carried on ABC during primetime. Platz showed poise and charisma on stage and the experience from the year before seemed to prepare her for this year’s competition. She lasted until the eighth round when she missed the word rhytidome. She was very close as she spelled it rhytodome. She had spelled the word gnocchi correctly in the previous round. Anamika Veeramani, 14, of North Royalton, Ohio, won the bee, correctly spelling “stromuhr” in the championship round. For the full story, see this week’s issue of the Shelbina Weekly.

| Large Portion of West Wall of Bowling Alley Caves In
| It had been leaning for weeks, and a thunderstorm with heavy wind and rain prompted more of the wall to cave in.
A large portion of the west side of the Shelbina Bowling alley, also known as the Morgan Building, fell in around 6:30 a.m. Thursday, June. 3. City workers were busy sweeping bricks off the street and taping that portion of Missouri Street off to keep people and traffic away from the structure. Shelbina City Administrator Dennis Klusmeyer said the City has submitted the paperwork for the emergency grant to the Department of Economic Development, but has yet to hear back on permission to proceed with demolition, meanwhile, the structure continues to fall a little at a time on its own.

| City Council Talks Possible Waste Water Rate Increase
Shelbina City Administrator Dennis Klusmeyer discussed a possible waste water increase during Tuesday night’s regular City Council meeting at the Shelbina City Hall. Wastewater Scenario Klusmeyer has said before the City has to be at a 2 percent median household wastewater rate to be eligible for grant money, which would be used on the upcoming waste water improvement project. He said the city has about 828 sewer customers. With a rate increase of an average of about $20, the City of Shelbina would be at the two percent and would be eligible to apply for grants for the project in about six months. He said currently there are several grants available for these projects. He said it would also allow the City to do some much needed upgrades and improvements with the waste water system. Klusmeyer said it would take a couple of meetings to get things lined out for the rate increase. He said he isn’t sure yet the best way to weight the increase where it would be fair to all who are affected. Klusmeyer would like to get the rate increase in place by the end of July. Possible Bond Issue The City is also looking at trying to pass a possible bond issue. “At some point we have to ask if we think there would be approval. Just because there is approval doesn’t necessarily mean we would use it all,” Klusmeyer said. He said he would like to have a series of town hall meetings to see what the feeling would be about approving a $7 million bond issue. He would like to have this ready for the November election. He said if this doesn’t pass, the City would have to re-think how to approach things. For the full story, see this week’s issue of the Shelbina Weekly.

| Kirby Travels the Country Serving As an FCCLA National Officer
| Caroline Kirby, third from the left, is shown with the other FCCLA National Officers during one of her trips to Washington D.C.
Caroline Kirby had a senior year like no other. It was full of experiences she will take with her the rest of her life. Kirby held a national office as National Vice President of STAR Events for the FCCLA. She was on the STAR advisory team which creates the events that take place throughout the year. “It was great for the development of leadership skills for me,” Kirby said. She was elected in July of 2009. She was one of 10 national officers who met in Nashville, Tenn. to discuss the approaching FCCLA year. In August she traveled to Reston, Virginia to the National FCCLA headquarters. “We kind of learned the nuts and bolts of the organization. We attended workshops and planned the National Cluster Meeting for November. At the end of September she was back in Reston, Virginia for the National Board of Directors orientation, which was a two to three day event. “While we were there we received scripts for our National Cluster meeting that was going to be in November. Kirby was there for her birthday on Oct. 2, and the entire group sang Happy Birthday to her. She also had a chance to go to Capital Hill while on that particular trip. With school starting back home, Caroline had to learn quickly how to manage her time and balance her school schedule with her FCCLA schedule. There wasn’t much down time for her during her senior year. For more on this story, see this week's edition of the Shelbina Weekly.
