The Shelby County R-IV School Board had plenty of public input in support of the Gifted Program during Thursday night’s regular board meeting in the middle school library.
   Public Support for
   Gifted Program
Several people were on hand for Thursday night’s meeting to express their desire for the board to continue with the district’s Gifted program. The program targets students who have excelled in the classroom and offers those students activities that are more suited for their needs. There was question as to whether the district would do away with the program with the financial crunch it is currently facing.
Angie Cochran, the current teacher of the Gifted program, read a prepared statement in support of the program. “All students can benefit from teaching practices encompassed in gifted education programming, but only if a gifted program exists,” she said. Cochran said the program is to help those students involved to further develop their higher abilities comprehensively as they progress through school. “Without providing these services we are not helping these students, but leaving them behind,” Cochran said. She noted that they are not more important than the other students, but they are just as important.
