South Shelby FFA Has Another Strong Showing at the State Convention

The South Shelby FFA Chapter traveled to the State FFA Convention in Columbia, MO on April 15-16. The Chapter received 8th in the National Chapter Activities out of 318 chapters. Caroline Kirby received third place in the MO Ruralist Essay Contest and received a 100-dollar savings bond.
   The Chapter took 5-contest teams to state. The teams consisted of knowledge, Forestry, Livestock, Meats, and Ag Mech. Knowledge received 36th out of 52 and earned a II rating. The team members were Josh Miles, Lindsay Jordan, Sandra Greenwell, and Tyler Foster. Justin Ensor, Maggie Rutter, Hillary Greenwell, and Jordan Watson ranked 13th out of 36 and received II a rating for Forestry. Justin Ensor received I rating and placed 24th in the state. The Livestock team scored 26th out of 59 and received II rating. The team members were Ben Werr, Ethan Decker, Alex Durbin, and Rhian Beldon. Ben Werr received I rating and placed 50th in the state. The meats team was Jason Weaver, Trevor Collins, Paige Wilt, and Darcy Long and got 2nd out of 48. The team received I rating and individually all of them received I ratings. Jason Weaver topped the team ranking 4th in the state.

South Shelby Campus Bowl Team Wins District

The South Shelby Campus Bowl team captured the District Championship last weekend. They will now take on Knox County.

wl varsity team won the Class 2, District 5 academic competition on Saturday, April 17th, winning five straight games.
   Captain, Justin Ensor, was named to the six-member all-district team. The varsity campus bowl team includes Dustin Bird, Chance Conn, Justin Ensor, Cody Morgan and Jesse Long. Joanne Neubauer, Junior Varsity captain, also played with varsity at districts.
   Teresa Thrasher coached for Ann Neubauer on Saturday along with Johnathan Coats the assistant coach. Neubauer had to go to Physics First Fellows Orientation in Columbia.
   South Shelby will play District 6 winner, Knox County, in the sectionals this Thursday at Knox County. Three matches will be played with the first match starting at 5:00pm. The team that wins two of the three matches will advance as one of the eight teams in the State Tournament which will be May 5th in Columbia.

Shelbina Man Escapes Injury as Truck and Train Collide Saturday

A Shelbina man escaped injury Saturday afternoon when the tractor he was driving collided with a Norfolk and Southern train on Monroe County Road 381, three miles east of Monroe City.
   According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 31-year-old Thomas J. Elsen was driving a Ricketts truck southbound when he failed to stop for an approaching train. The eastbound train, operated by 35-year-old Billy D. Crisp of Decatur, Ill., collided with the truck.

Fire Destroys Barn North of Shelbina

A structure fire Sunday afternoon resulted in a total loss of a barn north of Shelbina on Highway 15.
   According to the Shelbina Fire Protection District, a barn with some hay in it owned by Hurley Schwieter was fully engulfed with fire along with a small grass fire when fire fighters arrived. Schwieter had been burning grass and it reached the barn, catching it on fire.

South Shelby Prom Set for Saturday at the High School

The South Shelby High School Junior and Senior Prom will be held this Saturday.
   The Grand March will begin at 7 p.m. and start in the middle school gym. The couples will make their way east to the high school gym. The Prom will begin at 8 p.m. in the high school gym. This year’s colors are purple and gold and the theme is “A Whole New World.”
