Teresa Keller

The Shelby County Economic Development Council hired a new county-wide director during its regular monthly meeting at the Shelby County Extension Office on Thursday, March 4.
   New Economic
   Development Director
The Shelby County Economic Development Council interviewed two candidates for the job to replace Robert Harrington as its county-wide director. Board members said they were happy with the interviews of both Damon Reynolds and Teresa Keller. One of the deciding factors of hiring Keller was that she lived in Shelby County, while Reynolds, who works with the Boone County Sheriff’s Department, lives in Centralia. Keller also said she would consider taking on the job full time if it developed into that, when asked by board members.
Keller, who currently works at the Shelby County Health Department, will be able to continue that job since the Economic Development Director position has been scaled back to a half-time position by the board.
Keller was born and raised in Clarence and is a 1987 graduate of South Shelby High School. She and her husband Paul were married in 1986 and Paul served in the Air Force for 20 years. They lived in England, Texas, North Dakota, Alaska and then back to Texas. Keller said she and her husband gave a lot of thought of where they wanted to settle down. “There was definitely something pulling us back here. Shelby County will always be my home,” she said.
At the health department, Keller is in charge of the WIC program.

New Owners Bringing the Benjamin House Back to Life

The flowers are blooming and the Benjamin house is coming back to life thanks to Mike and Marilyn Shepherd.

When Mike and Marilyn Shepherd purchased the historic Benjamin House in June they knew their work was just beginning. They wanted to fix the place up and get it in as good of shape as possible, and at the same time, learn something about the house.
“Bob and Betty Crist and Kathleen Wilham have been great at getting us information and have been really supportive,” Mike explained.
Marilyn is originally from East Hannibal and Mike is originally from Hull. They are living in Hannibal. Marilyn teaches nursing at Blessing Rieman College of Nursing in Quincy. Mike has been in sales most of his life.
“We’ve been looking for an old house for several years. We saw several, but we like smaller towns. This one was a very interesting historically,” he explained. “Marilyn said ‘lets run out here to this sale’ and we saw a lot of potential in this place,” he added.
They started off putting a new roof on the house, along with new furnaces and air conditioning. “The water lines were all frozen up so we had to replace a lot of them. We thought we had it all taken care of and when we turned the water on, it started pouring through two of the chandeliers. There were a couple of copper lines that had split in areas where you couldn’t see,” Shepherd explained. He said they have also added another sump pump in the basement.
Trimming the trees was another major thing that was done in the front, and Mulberry trees in the back. “The city was very nice about getting rid of them for us after we hauled them to the ditch,” he said.
Shepherd has been building storm windows for the house.
A lot of carpentry work is being done on the inside, including plaster work on the inside walls. “We discovered an old dumbwaiter that went from the first floor to the basement. It’s a very large dumbwaiter.” He said it’s now working.
