MoDOT’s Northeast District Engineer Paula Gough was at Shelbina Elementary on Friday morning for the official ribbon cutting for the Safe Routes to School bus drop off.

Shelby County schools know how to get things done quickly. On Friday, October 30, they celebrated the completion of their new loading and unloading area for busses with a ribbon cutting. MoDOT, Klingner and Associates, Bleigh Construction, school faculty and several children participated in a completion walk and the ribbon cutting in the newly constructed area. The entire student body came outside to watch the walk and the ribbon cutting. The project was funded with a Safe Routes to School Grant cost of almost $120,000 and was completed in just nine months, which includes application approval, planning, engineering and construction.
“The new loading and unloading area takes the busses off of West College Street, so children can walk safely into the school,” said Paula Gough, MoDOT NE District Engineer.

Planning and Zoning Board Votes 3-1 to Recommend Not to Change Current Status

The Shelbina Planning and Zoning Board had a tough decision to make on Wednesday, Oct. 28. That decision basically came down to either helping an existing business continue in Shelbina, or go along with the wishes of several citizens who don’t wish to have a restaurant and lounge in their neighborhood. Ultimately, the final decision on the zoning issue will be made by the Shelbina City Council. The P&Z board was to make a reccomendation to the Council on the issue.
After a long discussion, and weighing both sides of the argument, Shelbina’s Planning and Zoning Board passed a motion to reccomend to the Council to not change the current zoning status that would include the property where the former Silver Steer restaurant and Lounge sits. It is currently zoned residential.
The issue was brought up after the back wall of Hoot’s Chestnut Inn collapsed, forcing Tim Moore to close his business at the corner of West Chestnut and South Center. Moore was interested in re-opening his business at the old Silver Steer building located on West Maple (Business 36) in Shelbina.
