| Volunteers Work Together to Make Improvements at Lakeside Golf Course

Shelbina Lakeside Golf Course Caretaker Johnny Presson said he always had problems trying to keep the grass on many of the tee-blocks healthy. Especially later in the summer as the heat took its toll. That problem has been solved with the help of several volunteers. “I just got to talking to the guys and said ‘let’s see if we can’t get some money rounded up.’ We ended up getting about $2,800.” Presson said one Thursday night about eight or nine weeks ago a bunch of volunteers, most of whom were golfers and members of the golf course, got together with Presson and they rented a sod cutter and started cutting the sod. They laid the sod, which is a form of Zoysia grass, on the three tee blocks on number four, the ladies tee block on number four, the men’s tee block on number five and a quarter of the tee block on number eight. Presson said they started on number four, because everything gets so hot in that area. “There’s not a lot of air that gets to this area, that’s why we started here,” he said. “If this works out well, I’ve got guys who are already saying ‘hey, lets do some more,’” he said. Presson said he wanted to see how the sod that was put in place works before they move on and do any more. “When we got ready to lay it, we had 22 guys out here to help. You couldn’t beat it, to have that many people come out to volunteer to do this stuff,” Presson said. For the full story, see this week’s issue of the Shelbina Weekly.

| Work on Highway 36 Four-Lane Project Moving Rapidly, Nearing Shelbina
The dust has been flying as workers have been putting in long hours on the Highway 36 Four-Lane project between Monroe City and Macon. The 52-mile project that originally spanned from The Rocket Truck Stop to Macon is getting closer to completion with each passing month. According to MoDOT, the project is approximately 60 percent of the way completed. MoDOT says the stretch between Shelbina and Monroe City is scheduled to be open to traffic by November. “We anticipate having the entire corridor open to traffic by July 2010,” said District Engineer Dan Niec. “When we began this project we had planned to have all lanes open to traffic an entire year earlier than promised. Unfortunately last year’s construction season was extremely challenging due to unusually heavy rainfall and localized flooding. Even with the unexpected weather delays we will complete the project six months earlier than promised,” he said. A 15 cent sales tax was approved by taxpayers in 2006 to fund half of the entire project’s cost.

| Webb Honored for 30 Years of Service With OATS

Sheree Webb was honored for the hard work and dedication she has put into her job with OATS for the last 30 years, on Monday as friends and family joined in a celebration of the event. She has served as the Northeast Regional Director for 18 years. Before that she was a Regional Coordinator for OATS. Webb was hired by OATS when the Northeast office was first being established in Shelbina in August of 1979. Before that, she worked in the Shipping and Production Control Office of Consolidated Aluminum/Conalco for John Best, Arnett Wise and Don Peters. Webb said she has seen a lot of changes over the last 30 years working with OATS. “With the type of growth OATS has experienced, I have seen many changes. Probably the most significant was when the service was opened up to the entire general public, not just the elderly and disabled, back in 1980,” she said. Webb added that the Northeast Region, which is comprised of 16 counties, started out with just the main office in Shelbina, but now has offices in Kirksville and Troy also.
