Economic Development representatives from all over Northeast Missouri were the Father Buhman Center in Shelbina on Wednesday evening to hear Linda Fettig, Executive Director of the Rural Development Commission of Nebraska speak. Fettig talked about working with Economic Development in the rural area. “We have a lot of towns in Nebraska with 300 or 400 people that we work with,” she said. She said towns, counties and states compete against each other all the time for many different things, but when the need arises, they can also work together for the beneift of everyone. Fettig mentioned the “Building Entrepreneurial Communities Program.” This is a program where communities have to work together with other communities on different programs. They are eligible for up to $75,000 in matching grants for different progams. She explained that when communities or organizations work together, everything works easier. Even you you don’t have the grant money, you can see if there is opportunity funding, the availability to see who you can partner with on things. | Harrington Talks About Results From County-Wide Survey
Shelby County Economic Development Director Robert Harrington summarized the results from the recent business survey that was given earlier this spring throughout Shelby County. Harrington said one of the major concerns that was taken from the survey results is the work force in Shelby County. “Because of that we are really going to attack the issue and I’m going to go back and work with the Workforce Investment Board. We will try to set up a couple of assemblies in the school to talk about what they really need to do to be prepared to be in the work force,” he said. Harrington added that there are certain careers out there that are “not cool” to school aged children. “Those are the jobs that are out there and available right now,” he added. Harrington said there is a major need in nurses right now in the health care field. “You don’t hear a lot of people say they are going to go off and be a nurse. The pay for that job is nice. We want kids to know that just because it’s not a lawyer or a sports agent, that it’s still a good job.” For the full story, see this week’s issue of the Shelbina Weekly.
